Re: adhd and scouting

Well Done Ian......
May I add something as well. Being Attention Deficit as well, for some
reason parents have found this out and have brought their kids to our
Troop. My being the Scoutmaster, I have chosen to "meet" these kid's
needs in real time. Let's say little johnny is being disruptive, I simply
call him to my side with " Mr. so and so come here please". When they
have done so, it is now time to address the behavior (again NOT the
person) tell the lad that you know that he is capable, and send him back
to his patrol. During this process I have met all of the needs present.
The boy's need for recognition (attention), his need for structure and
boundries, and the Troop's need of order.

Ian, made a most important statement when he said that it is critical
that we address behaviors instead of personalities or the person.

Lastly, training the kids and the parents to deal with me, is also an
effort, but easily managed. I make no issue about my being ADD, I really
see it as an asset. While others are doing one thing, I can be doing
others at the same time. Multi-tasking is probaly the most effective
skill alot of ADD ers have. How do I control our boys.....quite simply
...as Ian will attest...I keep them enormously busy.
