Hi All!
Just returned from Samoset Council's "Akela's World" Camp. Akela's World
is a permanent Cub Scout Residence Camp with an incredible facility and a
remarkable Staff. Over the past four days, these young people expended a
huge amount of energy and enthusiasm to make the experience fun and
memorable for the 120 Webelos present. The thing that stuck out most in my
mind though, was the ever present message that all this fun was just the
beginning... that by continuing on into Boy Scouts these boys would be in
for the adventure of a lifetime and a lifetime of adventure. I would say
that this message was directly conveyed at least 5 times per day during our
stay and constantly reenforced by the actions and examples of these fine
young men and women.
I would also like to brag about "my boys" a little. While we didn't win
the tug-of war or the scavenger hunt or any other competition, the Webelos
Scouts of Pack 379 behaved, followed instructions and worked together as a
team better than any other group of boys in camp (and many of the adults as
well). While the adults of another "Super Den" felt it would be fun to steal
the den flags of all of the other dens, "my Boys" didn't even want to
retaliate and sought no revenge. As one of them said "That would be
stealing. A Scout is Trustworthy. If we take thier flag, we're no better
than them". (Have I died and gone to Cubmaster Heaven?). When one of the
adults from another unit was loudly singing her own version of "Tommorrow"
at 11:15 last night, one of "my boys" knocked on my tent frame and asked if
I could "go ask that lady to be quiet. We'd like to get some sleep". As a
treat in our free time, we made "Spoon Fudge" from the recipe that was
posted on the list a while ago. One of "my boys" (actually my son) took his
down to the Trading Post to share it with the Staff members there (they had
asked for a copy of the recipe earlier when we told them we were going to
make fudge and he thought they might like to try some).
Thanks for indulging a proud, though tired, Cubmaster! Just had to tell
someone.
Yours in Scouting,
