One way to get folks to break the ice at a function is to "Scout Bingo"
Here how it goes. As the host, make up a typical "Bingo" card except
instead of putting alpha-numeric characters in it, put something similar
to the following examples (leave space in the square so folks can write
a name):
A SM
An ASM
A CC
A parent of an Eagle Scout
A holder of the District Award of Merit
A parent of a Arrow of Light recipient
A CM
A Den Leader
A Brotherhood Member of O/A
A Vigil Honor
I think you get the idea. You can gear the card to the group of folks
you are dealing with. You only need to make up one card; make copies
one per person.
As the group gathers/registers, have them put their name on a piece of
paper and place in a container. Give them a card.
Tell them to fill in the name of individuals who meet the requirement
stated. YOU CAN ONLY USE A PERSON'S NAME ONCE!!!
The objective is to have folks go around and ask other folks about
themselves and their Scouting career. Once you find an individual who
meets that particular requirement, put their name in that block. (Might
want to add last name if you have a large group!). Give the group time
to "work the room" at the beginning of the program. Tell the folks to
hang on to their cards.
If you are like me, you get little "gifts" in the mail or you can pick
up inexpensive "Scouting related" items from your local Service Center
to use as prizes.
Some where later in your program, it is time to play "BINGO". Remember
the container that you had folks put their name in as they registered?
These are what you call out. Have some one reach in and pull a name;
call it out. Any one who has that persons name on their card, "covers"
that name. Remember, you can only use a person's name once on any card.
That means that a person could be a SM on one card and a Vigil Honor on
someone else's card and a Parent of an Eagle Scout on a third card. It
also means that 10 different folks could have used the same person as a
SM....I hope I made myself clear on this point.
Anyway, keep drawing names until someone has covered a row or card (how
ever you set the rules for a typical round of Bingo). I usually use a
row and when you have a winner, they get to select one of the little
gifts that you have.
