Re: Internet Roundtable

(no name) ((no email))
Tue, 9 Jul 1996 13:25:25 -0500

George Costigan added some great information to my earlier
posting, but didn't choose to mention one other resource:

See, George works at America Online; more specificially, he works
at Global Network Navigator (GNN), a rather successful offshoot of
AOL. GNN allows you to enjoy the Internet on a national scale without the
"handholding" that AOL gives you.

GNN's software is all-inclusive and allows you to read and answer email,
read and post to USENET newsgroups, do gopher searches and browse the
World Wide Web (although their web browser is undergoing revisions and
regrettably not as good as Netscape's). Their software is also free for the
asking, and I'm sure that if you called the phone number he provided in his
posting, and ask for GNN software, that you will get several copies to pass
around.

I mention this because since GNN was started, I've been using their software
to read and post to the newsgroups I've subscribed to. It's easy to use, and
is a "all-in-one" package suitable for those folks that have limited diskspace
but want to "do everything on the Internet". I no longer subscribe to GNN
(I hope to come back to it soon) but the software allows you to use your
existing connection and Internet Service Provider (ISP).

>Please mention that you would providing these a training session for Adult
>Scouters; they still don't believe me that Scouts would benefit from being on
>AOL ;)

I think that Pat Skelly and George both would benefit from your telling them
that
the diskettes will be used for Scouting programs. The AOL Scouting forum
is not growing as much as we all expected it would be, and that's partly because
AOL doesn't see the Scouting programs with a viable prescense in cyberspace.
Pat has to fight monthly for space for Scouting-related files and for a
place to
"meet" electronically. George, from the product development end of things,
needs to have his bosses assured that yes, AOL/GNN is an inexpensive way for
Scouts and Scouters to meet and work together online on a regular basis and that
there should be additional tools developed to allow youth program members and
leaders/advisors to have access to the wonderful world out there on phone lines.

>Normally, I am encouraged to bite my tongue when someone here mentions "AOL
>did this or that to me, my friend, or my harddrive". However, this is
>something I can pass along if it will help.

It definately will, and thanks for piggy-backing onto my posting!! Hope
everything
is going well there!!

(no, I do not work at AOL or GNN but I do have an account with AOL
practically since
it's beginnings!)
