Scouting is a YOUTH organization.
We the adults are just there to be drivers :) I enjoy Scouting as much as
the other adult, but I am constantly reminded (by myself and by our boy
leaders) that it is their program, and if they have a good program then I
should let them do it. Of course, a SM has to maintain some veto power,
especially in cases of safety, etc, but I think that all emphasis should be
placed on letting them run the program as much as possible.
This leads to my opinion on Eagle: it's an award earned by the BOY. It is
not easy to earn it as a boy, while it would be relatively easy for an
adult to earn it (greater skills, no time/age limit, ...). I hope not to
offend anyone by this opinion, but I think it would lessen the meaning of
the Eagle badge if adults could earn it. We have our own achievements,
including Wood Badge. Try being on Summer Camp Staff if you want some
additional Scouting challenges (why do I keep going back to camp?).
