I had a similar opportunity a few years ago when a 14 year old from the
former Czechoslovakia joined my troop to go to summer camp with us. His
uncle was doing a scientific exchange with us, asked if it was possible,
and I was only too happy to oblige. It was a GREAT experience for
everyone. My advice is to try not to single him out too much at all.
Sure, your guys and maybe some from other troops need to have the chance
to learn a bit about his native land... it may fulfill a requirement for
Citz in the world, by the way, but lets face it. This is a teenage boy
and will probably just want to fit in, a task he may perceive as
difficult to begin with because of the differences in backgrounds. The
young man who camped with us was very popular with my "regular" scouts. I
introduced them, let them know that it was an opportunity for everyone,
then spoke with a couple of my senior boy leaders to make sure they
understood that it was important he feel included. Then Ilet it take its
own course from there. Worked great. He had a great experience. We had a
great experience. So will your visitor scout!
