Re: Commando Rope

I just finished a couple of commando ropes and found this to be true.
I like a hefty piece of manilla rope that starts out about 7 to 71/2 feet
long -- the finished size will be 6 feet long. One end has the eye splice
open and the other has the eye splice over a toggle. I used a piece of
rhododendron wood about 4-5 inches long and about 2 inches in diameter. I
trimmed it slightly in the center to help keep the splice in place and the
toggle from falling out of the eye.
I've tried synthetic rope, but I find it harder to splice with. I also found
that it was easier to tape the ends of the rope tightly with electrical tape
or duct tape and trim the ends when the splice is done. Novice splicer may
find it helpful to tape each end with a different color tape.
A trick is getting the splice tight around the toggle. Most first tries, the
toggle falls out. That's why it helps for the toggle ends to be larger than
the center. You need stout wood so the toggle doesn't break in two when you
attach several ropes together and put weight on them.
Good luck.
