Since other list members might be interested, I'll take the liberty
of replying "in public," so to speak. Our council (Capitol Area,
Austin, Texas HQ) has a very nice and very popular camp called Lost
Pines Scout Reservation north of Bastrop, with lots of waterfront
activities, C.O.P.E., etc. It may be full, but you can call Martin
Payne at 1-800-444-1910 (I think that's right) to check.
You might try Camp Tahauya near Salado (south of Temple), where
I went to camp as a boy. Check with the Heart O' Texas Council in
Waco.
El Rancho Cima has at least two summer camps--Cockrell River
Ranch and Horseshoe Bend--at its site west of San Marcos. It's
operated by the Sam Houston Area Council in Houston.
Our troop is going to try Bear Creek, operated by the Alamo Area
Council in San Antonio. The camp is near Kerrville; older boy
features include mountain biking, C.O.P.E., and rappelling down
120-foot cliffs, if I understand correctly. Call 1-800-940-2721 and
ask for Jean.
