SUBJECT: 1st Class, cooking with canned foods
This question points out that Scout leaders expect perfection from the boys in
completing rank requirements. Most youth in America have had limited
experience cooking. To presume that they can come on a campout with no
instruction and cook a meal outdoors (we all know that cook times are longer
than in the house) points out that we are so caught up in the words we forget
that we need to TEACH. Judge each boy BY HIS ABILITY. Some may only aspire to
"heating up canned foods." Others may become gourmet cooks. Keep in mind what
we are after. To teach self reliance (ie the ability to prepare a nutritious
meal), how to plan a meal (ie all food groups present) and how to budget a
meal (estimate cost and amounts). Start New Scout Patrols with the basics
and then steer them toward more elaborate meals later in their scouting
life.
