Re: AOL and cross overs

In regard to Scouts crossing over into Boy Scouts at the end of 4th Grade
with their AOL we had a similar sitiuation last year with one of our scouts
and parents. The Parent really wanted the boy to jump into Scouting right
away. However, the local Troops that we normally feed to quietly let it be
known that they didn't want to deal with such a young Scout, and for fairly
valid reasons. 1) Level of maturity is questionable ( and this was a valid
concern with this particular Scout) 2) They felt that it would be very hard
on the Scout to be in elementary school while all of the other Scouts in the
Troop were in Middle or High School. It was felt that this could both be a
barrier and a stigma that the younger Scout would feel hard to breach.
I passed on these concerns to the Parent in question, and at the time they
were having a lot of discipline problems with the boy, and I guess, decided
for themselves that he could use one more year with his peers. He will
receive his AOL and cross over to Boy Scouting next month, and seems to be
very happy with the way that this year has gone for him.
By the way, we will cross over all of our Webelos II in Feb. ( although last
year one of two dens choose to remain with the Pack until May - mostly
because the boys had not yet completed their AOL). However, we invite all of
the boys to come back for the March Pack Meeting and participate in the
Pinewood Derby - kind of a nice way for them to ease the transition between
Cubs and B.S.A. And last year's Den that crossed over late do now regret
it as they are quite a ways behind the Den that crossed over in Feb. and are
all playing catch-up!
