Mike,
I for one draw the line at hitting. This is an "unacceptable" in my troop.
Sure every now and then a fight will begin, but I expect/demand that the boy
leaders stop it before it begins. When cronic, I move in. As some may
recall, our strong troop of nearly 50 boys started with 6 boys leaving
another local troop because of older boy hazing. Since day one, this kind
of older/younger conflict is unacceptable. Because the boys enforce it, I
don't have to.

Last night I was missing a SPL. My ASM said I needed to hurry to the cloak
room where Jason (SPL) was going at it with a younger scout. When we got
there we found SPL Jason mediating a dispute (with hitting) between two
younger scouts. He had seen the problem, had isolated the combatants, and
was counseling them back to civility. The fight? Oh, between PL and ASM
about responsibility and leadership :-) Who says 11 year olds can't have
passionate leadership desires. They just can't always control it.
