BSA scouting in Bangladesh

How refreshing! An environment where you can observe the richness of the
diversity of human cultures. It also appears that the scouts learn to
respect that diversity.

In our community (outside Rochester, New York), we have a similar opportunity
thanks to the cultures attracted to the area by two respected universities.
Unfortunately, I don't think we maximize that opportunity. When the
cultural "mix" is inserted in a society full of pre-conceptions and
self-interest, too many people concentrate on the differences as negatives.
Perhaps, our job in scouting is to help the boys think in terms of
"distinctions" rather than "differences"; how to benefit from the variety
rather than laugh at it; how to understand diversity rather than be afraid of
it. Then we can help the boys grow into adults that have a positive impact
on their community/society.
