Troop 477, Atlanta Area Council, has an advancement program very
similar to that described by Jim Sleezer in an earlier post. We have
a member of the Troop Committee who is our advancement chairman,
and Scouts are reffered to him or one of his helpers when they seek a
Merit Bdage Counselor. Work on MB's is done outside of the meeting,
although we often have programs during the meeting which may apply
to some Merit Badges. The Scouts are responsible for meeting with their
assigned counselor to present their work for sign-off.
I recently taught the Genealogy MB in class room format, with five
Scouts in attendence. We had a 2.5 hour session on a Saturday
at the beginning of the month, and one at the end of the month with
work to be done in between. None of the boys had done all of the work
by the second session. Within the next month, two Scouts completed
all of the requirements, meeting with me immediatley pior to, or after
Troop meetings. The other three are still working, but I only expect
one of them to actually finish. The others are not showing the initiative,
and I will not schedule more "class/lecture" style meetings to finish.
This has been our experience in general. We plan teaching sessions,
but work is to be done outside those sessions and subsequently signed
off by the counselor.
