I live about 50 miles from Fox River Grove, the location of the tragic bus
and train collision that occured a week and a half ago.
We had a blood drive at work last week. We do a few every year. We are
served by the Heartland Blood Center which also serves Cary and Fox River
Grove, Illinois. They said they had been very busy with people donating
blood since the accident.
When the tragedy occured, Heartland Blood Center had an emergency supply
of blood on its way to the trauma center where the injured were being
treated at within the hour. In the ER many kids needed blood, and many
may have survived because their was enough blood on hand.
There have been prayers offered, condolences sent, candles lit, and monetary
contributions sent on behalf of the victims of the bus/train crash. I
would suggest we all donate a pint of blood to our local blood banks as well.
We don't know when or where the next tragedy will strike. A safe supply of
blood is a necessity for proper response to such emergencies. We can
help our communities to "be prepared" for such a tragedy by spending a
few minutes out of our day to donate a pint of blood.
