Advancement, merit badges, etc.

Hi all,

I have been reading the mail and figured that I would put in my two cents
worth.

Merit Badges
One of the purposes behind MB's is for the boy to learn to work with
people
that he doesn't know too well. This is where many troop fall flat,
by having
troop adults do all the merit badges for the boys.

Even though there is no limit on the number of MB's that one
counselor can
do, they better have some knowledge in each one they list and be able
to give
a me some background. I had one Scoutmaster list every MB on a
counselors
application and I asked him to write a paragraph on each one stating
what his
qualifications were. I never heard back from him.

On the two deep thing. It can be two boys, or a boy and a
parent/guardian. I
also tell my MB counselors that it's a good idea for them to have
another person
present for the meetings. The way some people are, you can never be
too
careful.

EAGLES
The Eagle rank is very special and should not be taken lightly. I
sit in on between
20 and 30 Eagle Board of Reviews every year and find some of them
very
interesting.

Some important things to remember, the project cannot be started
until ALL
approvals have been received and that includes the one from the
District/Council.
I have had only one boy start a project with out all the approvals
and unfortunately
that project did not meet "Eagle standards" and he had to start all
over again.

Another important thing is that the letters of recommendation are to
come from
those people who are listed as referances on the front of the Eagle
application.
Some Councils are beginning to check this, so are some of the
District advancement people.

Enough for now, my fingers are getting tired :-)
