Re: Plastic Zippers on Tents

Tom,

<<Does anybody know if there is an easy way to fix this?>>

Yes, I do. I have successfully fixed many zippers on tents with only a normal
pliers in hand. I could explain the process myself, but I found a better
explanation on the Kelty Tent Owners Manual earlier this year when we bought
some Quattro 2 and Quattro 2 Expedition tents. I was glad to find out I had
been doing the right thing. Here it is along with a little Kelty selfpromotion.

"REPAIR
Zippers Got No More Zip
Have you ever zipped a zipper and had the teeth not catch? This is a fairly
common problem for a well used day pack. Tents can eventually have this
problem, too. Before you fix this yourself you should know that this repair
will be done for free by Kelty as part of its lifetime gauranteee. Just call
the 800 number on the back of this manual and they'll help you. (Since this is
a normal wear and tear problem, this writer has no idea why Kelty does this.
Just a good relations kind of thing, I guess.) Back to zippers: Very seldom
are the zipper teeth to blame for zipper seperations. What is usually going on
when this happens is that the slider (the sliding part that opens and closes the
zipper) has worn on the inside so it can't bring the zipper teeth together. The
first kind of repair for this zipper problem is to carefully squeeze the wings
of the slider together with a pair of pliers. This repair works on all zippers
if the slider is at fault. It only takes a little squeeze and you'll be set for
a few more months.

A longer lasting solution is to replace the sliders. Be sure to use nickel
plated sliders like the ones we originally put on your tent because they are
much more durable than painted ones."

That's it. Try it, it works. Please note that the "this writer" above is not
me but the person that wrote the Kelty manual.
