Cooking merit badge

I am a troop counselor for this badge. While I believe it possible to
earn this badge in camp, some of the requirements absolutely have to be
done before, and it is much better if the Scout has to obtain his
ingredients from someplace other than the camp commissary (a relatively
brainless exercise). The cooking for this merit badge should be done in
camp - not as part of the merit badge class; when it is earned in camp it
has probably been assumed by the camp MB counselor that the cooking
requirements have been carried out in the troop campsite.... As for those
who go to dining hall camps, well....
My son earned this badge in camp. I might well have not signed off on
it, but this decision is left up to the merit badge counselor - not the
troop. The two remedy within the troop are to develop activities which
will encourage the scouts to acquire the "missing" proficiencies, and to
make your thoughts known to the camp director and council.
