Re: Philmont Topo Maps

"Michael J. Brophy" <Mbrophy@AOL.COM> asked:

>Does anyone know where I can get topographic maps for Philmont?

First of all, check with Philmont. They sell topo maps of the ranch
that are poster size. They have them in 2 different scales, a 1:48000
scale map that shows the entire ranch, or a set of 3 1:24000 scale maps
that cover the ranch (North, Central, and South Country). I personally
like the set of 3 maps, as they are much more detailed (They came out
after I worked at Philmont). It seems like the maps are $2.50 each.

If you ever need topo maps for any other place, the U.S. Geological
Survey sells them via mail order. Unfortunately, they do not take
credit cards (you have to mail a check). You can get 15 minute series
maps (which have a scale of 1:62500) or 7.5 minute series (1:24000).
Each map is $2.50.

The 7.5 minute Quadrangles that cover Philmont are:

Cimarron (City of Cimarron)
Coyote Mesa (Base Camp)
Rayado (Rayado)
Abreu Canyon (Ponil Area)
Ute Park (Ute Park / Visto Grande / Bear Canyon)
Tooth of Time (Tooth of Time to about PJ)
White Peak (South part of Ranch)
Touch Me Not Mountain (Baldy Country)

These maps cover an area outside of the Philmont Boundries, but the
scale / detail is equivalent to the set of 3 maps available from
Philmont (and the Philmont maps are lot cheaper than buying from USGS).
If you are going to visit the Valle Vidal, you would need those maps as
well (I'm not sure exactly which maps you would need). Philmont sells
the USGS maps of that area in the trading post.

If you want more information on ordering maps from the USGS, write to:

USGS Map Sales
Box 25286 Federal Center, Bld. 25
Denver, CO 80225

Ask for a Index to topographic and other Map coverage as well as an
index to published maps for the state you wish to order maps from. The
first thing lists the quadrangles covering the state, the second lists
which maps are available and in what format (some areas are not covered
by 7.5 minute maps, some are not covered by 15 minute maps).

I have also found topo maps at the Rand-McNally Map and Travel Stores (I
have one just down the street from my office). They charge $5 per map,
usually have a limited number of maps from the local (2-3 state) area.
They will order maps for you, but it is cheaper to do it directly via
USGS.
