Like many others on this list, I enjoyed a great experience at Philmont
this summer. I participated in a Cavalcade program which is entirely on
horseback, except for one day where we rest the horses. We climbed Baldy
that day.
This was my 9th trip to Philmont, the first since 1986. It felt good to
return. Over the past 25 years Philmont has become sort of a home away
from home for me.
Our entire cavalcade was in the north country, starting and ending in
Ponil. The mountains and trails remain the same, the staff has the same
spirit and enthusiasm, and the boys express the same wonder and
enjoyment. There are a few minor procedural changes, a few new programs,
and the addition of the vast Valle Vidal area <which I need to return and
explore someday>.
Philmont was the great experience it has always been.
Still, it's good to be home.
