Boy's Life Reading Level

Johnette Sue Seibert (sseibert@TENET.EDU)
Thu, 10 Aug 1995 22:12:01 -0500

I believe for a very long time they were thinking that challenging the
younger boys was appropriate--and it seemed to work for YEARS.
I am a grandmother Scouter with manifold jobs in Scouting who is also a
resource teacher in 2nd and 3rd grade level. All my students, even the
girls, will pull a Boy's Life off the shelf and really try to read it
over other books and magazines written "at their ability level" because
it is so interesting.
My third grade grandson reads cover to cover and assists and
encourages his Tiger Cub brother--they both love it. As do the majority
of the boys in our Pack.
The cost is just part of our "package" at recharter time.
Where else can you get such a slick monthly magazine of such high
quality for boys for ONLY $7.80 per year?
As a resource teacher and a grandmother I do not believe in
lowering its contents and level--but rather helping the boys who cannot
read it. It is a sad commentary on today that parents don't take the
time to read to their children--and that TV is the be all and end all in
at home education.
