Re: Boy's Life Reading Level

Jim Miller reported that Boys Life will be published in two different
editions...one for Cubs and one for Boys Scouts. I say, "hooray!!"
Back when I was a Cub leader, we actually discouraged parents of Tiger
Cubs from paying for a BL subscription because of the reading/interest
level. I couldn't see paying $7.80 a year for one page a month of fun.
As my son got older and was able to read better, I subscribed but the
interest level was much older than he was. Now that he's 12, the
articles interest him and are very easy for him to read (I think I heard
somewhere that it's written at a 4th-grade reading level?). It
becomes a monthly battle between him and me as to who grabs it first for the
jokes in the back <g>.

Back to Jim's comment: it is ludicrous for an article concerning
subject-matter of interest to teenagers to be written at a 4th grade
reading level; even more ridiculous is that it be published in a magazine
sold to 1st-thru-5th graders! What =were= they thinking?
