You keep right on posting here!
Like you, sometimes *some* of my postings meet with a deal of
criticism from those that "have to wade through a lot to read" what I
wrote. I assure myself after reading my posting twice before sending
that I write postings dealing with my or other experiences in
Scouting, that it relates to the charter of the list in that we share
stories and information on youth programs and youth problems, and that
someone out there gets something from it that they can share with
other Scouters or other youth leaders.
I am constantly asked to "post more, post more" by those that write me
privately asking. When I can, I do and will continue to do so (of
course, now that we have more than a thousand or so here around the
virtual campfire, I limit my postings to the 200-line limit as much as
I can).
The intent of this list is NOT to represent one point of view, one
concern or even one program over all others; it is present as many
sides of an issue in an environment of caring, listening/reading, and
which will provoke thought. It is only in these ways can we take what
we read here each day, and relate and share it with those that we
work with and in return, the youth of our programs that we hope will
benefit from our "prescence" here on this forum.
I hope that what I write helps some Scout or other youth program
member somewhere. I know that what others have written here have
helped *me* in teaching, coaching and working with youth program members
as well as Scouts and Scouters in the past five years.
I was going to write this out as a separate posting, but.....
Rodger makes a great point in reminding us all that Scouting is not
limited to "the lower 48" states, nor is limited to what many outside
the BSA call "the American Way of Scouting". While on my counterpart
tour, I had a chance to sit in on an satellite interview and briefing
with a member of the 40th Public Affairs Team. The Team supports the
101st Infantry Division (Air Assault), the 5th Special Forces Group
and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, all stationed at
Fort Campbell, as well as other units attached to the military
installation. Specialist Ray has been in the Sinai for the past
three months, covering the actions of several military units sent
there as part of the Multinational Force Observation organization,
part of the United Nations' "enforcement" of the Camp David Peace
Accords.
In his briefing to the staff of the 40th PAT, he explained some of the
diversions that some of the soldiers assigned there do to remind them
of their home: Armed Forces TV, card games, letter writing, Scouting,
board games, and photography.
"Scouting?" I almost leaped out of my seat when he stated that word.
It took me the first week just to find out when Troop 101 (the only
Boy Scout Troop at Fort Campbell, I was told) meets!
After introducing myself as "the Reserve guy", I asked him about the
word he used.
"Yeah Sir,", he started, looking into the camera, "There's several of
the Rakkassans (the nickname of the 187th Infantry Regiment) that work
with the Boy Scouts and stuff in the (Golan) Heights. They teach them
knots and stuff". I smiled when I asked if he'd considered doing a
piece on their civil actions. "Well Sir, they kinda havata do it
unofficially, but yeah, I can do it later on...I took some pictures of
them, though, something for the (organizational) books".
It's good to know that even in the middle of protecting a peace
agreement, that *still* some folks find time for Scouting.
