Another Philmont trek report

Well, it seems that there were quite a bunch of us at Philmont in July. I
began my trek on 7/14, right at the end of the dry spell that one of the
previous posters mentioned. We had precipitation of some noticable degree
on the first nine days we were there, including 4 days where we got pretty
good rains (despite the assertion of the Philmont censor on my postcard to
my parents that there were only 2 days of rain).
I had a great time on my trek; we did trek 5 which is a "typical" trek of
53 miles (officially). I won't clutter the list up with the multitude of
stories that I picked up (although it certainly is tempting to do so).
I will take a little space to comment on the solo hiking debate currently
raging. I think that for all scouting activities, the appropriate way to
hike is by patrol, with at least one adult per patrol (with enough adults
total to meet troop and BSA guidelines). If an adult wants to go hiking by
themselves on their own time, then they have that right. I've done short
hikes into the Rockies by myself a few times, and they can be fun. But I
would recommend hiking in pairs (or more) for any longer term hikes (so
that there is somebody to give help if needed).
