Must disagree on the stategy of letting each hiker set his/her own pace. As
a youth, hiked the Apellachian (sp?) with my explorer post. Got tired of
waiting for the "slow" hikers and needless to say we lost one. Screwed up
the trip for the whole group as we spent the next twenty-four hours on a
forced march into the nearest police station where luckily he was found. By
then everone was so tired that all but a handful of us gave up on finishing
the trip. Safety not comfort is paramount!
