Steve, the same problem exists in my troop. There are some kids that won't
do anything without their dad. Also, the dads take it upon themselves to
treat everyone like cub scouts, including their kids. The problem is in my
view, twofold. First, we stress advancement too much and we don't stress
fun. learning and development enough. Second, we have too much parental
involvement in troops. My problem is not that they are active, it is that
they are controlling. In the German troop that I am a part of, the
Scoutmaster runs everything but with the help of the troop. He is not just
the leader but he is also a scout. They regard each other as a family... we
don't do that here. That may be why there are so few 18 year old scouts
around who are actually active.
