Bob Myers asked the following:
>Our troop is interested in information (on the net or in books) on edible wild
>plants, specifically, those prevalent in the Great Smoky Mountain National
Park,
>where we will be backpacking next month for 4 days.
To which I wanted to add another question:
In the requirements for Wilderness Survival Merit Badge it askes the boy to
explain why it may not be wise to eat local edible plants in a wilderness
survival situation.
I can think of a few possible reasons:
1. Chance for misidentification leading to eating a non edible plant.
2. Chance of bacterial infection associated with eating local plants even if
edible. (food poisoning)
3. Potentially don't have the necessary equipment to properly prepare such
things as stinging nettles or dandilions, etc.
Can anyone add some others?
