Re: Merit Badge work

Bob,

This has been discussed before, we can hit on it again. It is important
and frequently misunderstood.

There is no fee to register as a merit badge counselor.

To register as a merit badge counselor you must complete two forms:
1. Mandatory! An adult leader application with code 42 as the position
code must be completed and turned in. It does not matter that you are or
are not a Scoutmaster or registered or not registered in any position.
This must be done at least once for the Merit Badge Counselor position.
(Your unit or district position gets you registered in that position, it
DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY REGISTER YOU A MB COUNSELOR.) Once you are
registered, your name goes on the district list (as a member of the
district committee and a MBC my name is on the district list TWICE!) Every
year the district re-charters, just like the units do. Many distircts will
try to verify that the MBCs on that list plan to continue as MBCs. If not
they drop them from the list (charter). If they plan to continue, they
remain on the charter (just like the units do it!).

2. Also Mandatory, but not as misunderstoad as #1. National has a form and
many councils/districts have their own version of the form for registering
the merit badges you plan to be a counselor for. On this form you list the
merit badges you plan to teach and your training/qualifications for
training these merit badges. This is used by the district to develop the
Distirct and unit (for those who only want to work with their unit) merit
badge counselor lists.

Last, after turning in the paper work you must be approved by the
district/council advancment committee/chair (depending on how your council
handles this).

The requirments for Eagle are mostly trivial. Doing them is what is
significant, because most people never finish what they start.
