Academic Problems

Thanks for all the wonderful posts and supporting comments.

I didn't want to bore everyone in my original post with other
details but in response to some of your comments I'm going
to take the risk of boring some of you.

My wife and I knew this C- in Science was a possibility. It was
the end of school report card. Chris had one really bad test.
So we are not suspecting some other change in his life as the
cause. He also says he doesn't like science which is strange given
his genuine love of math. Maybe its just the teacher's approach
or maybe its the particular topics covered this year. He really
seemed to catch on and have an interest when I cover the
Webelos Scientist activity badge for his den for a couple of
meetings. Any way, I know he likes to rush through assignments
to get to other things and I know he hates to study for test because
either its boring or he thinks he knows it already. And he wants
to be independent and refuses my help to study even though
math and science are my best subjects. After the one bad test
and the low mid-term grade we talked and he assured us he'd
bring it up by the end of school. Maybe the hole was too deep
to recover in so short of time. So I've told him he can no longer
just say he can do it himself. I think he accepts that he should
be able to do much better at science and that he should like it
(my theory that minds that like math should also like science).
I've told him he needs to accept more help in preparing for exams
and that he can't blow off studying for exams. For now his
extra-curricular activities are in tact and no change is required
until after his first mid-term next Fall. But he knows the
expectations so he should understand that study habits need to
change to make sure extra-curricular activities stay in tact.
