<Stepping on soapbox>
Motivation is a VERY personal thing. Those who volunteer for scouting
are no exception. Aside from the darker child abuse type motivations,
does it matter WHY Scouters are motivated to volunteer their time?
If Scouters are motivated to earn knots ... the boys still gain.
If Scouters are motivated by adult comeraderie ... the boys still gain.
If Scouters are motivated by enjoyment of kids ... the boys still gain.
If Scouters don't work at the unit level ... the boys still gain.
It takes all kinds of people to promote and make scouting work. If
there weren't people in the organization that didn't work directly with
kids, the organization would fall apart overnight.
Humility is not a point in the Scout Law although it can be a desirable
trait. I personally, think that wearing knots sets a good example for
the kids. Pride in achievement is an infectious quantity and a strong
motivator too.
When I shake the hand of a new Eagle Scout, and he sees the red,white, and
blue knot on my chest, I believe he glimpses what giving-back-more-than-
you-got is all about.
