You're absolutely right. Many adult leaders are overlooked when it comes
to recognition. I believe there is a responibility of those that are
working with a leder that deserves recognition to put that person in for
an award. Granted some are earned and some are recognition in the
strictest sense. In my district, I just had a person who had been a
Scoutmaster for over 15 years and not received a single recognition award
(official BSA award or knots, etc...) The Committee Chairman called me
and asked if the outgoing scoutmaster could be put in for an award.
Absolutely! It should have been done sooner. Being on the district
committe and having been in the district only 2 years, I had no idea what
kind of service this scoutmaster was doing for youth. THe only people
that knew over all those years were the adults (and youth) that were
working with them on a regular basis.
I guess what I am realizing is the need for the district committee to do a
better job at educating unit leaders regarding the awards program.
I also think we need to keep in mind the different types of awrds and
recognition available. Of course there is the BSA knots and the like.
THere are also `homemade' awards presented as `thank-you's'. Also, don't
forget the original reward that is at the heart of us all, the difference
we make in the lives of young men. The immediate tell tale sign is a
smile on the face of a boy!
