Some factoids about the AT (as we hikers living near it know it). It
is 2140 miles long, not 400 or 800, as has been said herein lately.
It runs from Springer Mountain, GA to Mt. Kahtadin, ME. It takes
about six months to hike it through, although it has been done in as
few as 55 days.

I have hiked parts of it, especially in Shenandoah National Park,VA,
where I went on a week long trek in 1990. It rained 6 out of 8 days,
but I loved every minute of the trip. Don't be reluctant to check out
some of the side trails in SNP however--they are often gorgeous.

Anyway, my dream is to hike the entire length of it someday--hopefully
the first year after I retire (if I'm in good enough shape).

The Appalachian Trail conference is in Harpers Ferry, WVA. You can
reach them through WVA information.

There is also an AT page on the WWW at
http://www.fred.net/kathy/at.html . It is quite interesting, and
also has a link to a bunch of scouting home pages.

Yis,
