I think that this is a very good solution (set the entrant requirements by
grade level in stead of age). My son will head to Boy Scouts in one more
year, and I have been thinking along these same lines. In Cubs, everything
is grade oriented, and so it hasn't mattered that he is an August kid and a
lot of his fellow den members are 1-1 1/2 years older. But it seems that
once he hits Boy Scouting he will be left behind by his buddies when he
starts hitting things like age limits at Philmont!
A touch of Girl Scouting, too!! I hope they use this same suggestion. I
have a Brownie, so we haven't gotten into the big adventures yet, but our
daughter skipped one year in school. She also may have a future problem if
everything is age oriented!!
If they are able to maintain the same grade levels and maturity and athletic
levels required for that grade in school, why should they be held back in
Scouting?
