Re: 2nd World CyberSpace Jamboree needs your support (fwd)

A few people have asked for more info. So here goes:

Subject: Re: 2nd World CyberSpace Jamboree needs your support

The 1st World CyberSpace Jaboree was held on the Thursday of the
Jamboree from 8 to 10 am (Perth time). It was held in CompuServe's
Conference center. Worldwide we had a minimum of 300 terminals on line.
We had 14 terminals at the Perth Site, with three people at each.

2nd World CSJ:
The story as I understand it is: A Friend of mine (In Columbus, Ohio)
was trying to organise the CyberSpace Jamboree to be a part of the Computer
Activity on the world Jamboree.

He was communicating via email directly to (I think) the Director of
Computer Activity.

He was told by a Jack Moore of the BSA that that was in
appropriate. He then he was sorry to the bloke in charge of the computer
activities, and continued.

A few days later he got a message (repeated below) to stop all
preparations for the CyberSpace J. from Jack Moore.

----inc message-----
=> Jack F. Moore
=> Director, Jamboree Division
=> Boy Scouts of America
=> National Office
=> 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane
=> P.O. Box 152079, Irving, Texas 75015-2079
=> 214-580-2000
=> writes to:
=>
=> Jeff Woosley, Council #441
=> Donald A. Hemstreet, Scout Executive Council #441
=> Jim King, Central Region
=> Lawrence Otto, Central Region
=> Mrs. Rietje Ritzema, World Jamboree Secretary
=> Beverly Myers, International Division, S221
=>
=> Today I received a telefax message from the office of the 18th
=> World jamboree regrading the Cyberspace program.
=>
=> The major impact of the message is as follows:
=>
=> * "It is absolutely not our intention to start a very expensive
=> Cyberspace activity during the world jamboree."
=>
=> * "Furthermore, the various computer network which will
=> exist there (Compu Serve, Internet), will NOT be used as communication
=> channel by the world jamboree organization."
=>
=> * "We contacted Mr. ---- again to point out our official policy
=> and to tell him to stop all the preparations for Cyberspace."
=>
=> Therefore, these comments define clearly the position of the
=> world jamboree.
=>
=> The events surrounding this issue underscore the importance of
=> your following the correct procedures in order to make contact
=> with anyone in the Scouting movement outside your local council
=> if you plan to interact with other local councils, the regional
=> organization in Scouting, the national office, and most important
=> International Scouting organizations.
=>
=> The importance of the local council having knowledge and over
=> sight for all such interactions cannot be emphasized too much.
=>
=> While I appreciate your interest and desire to help develop this
=> program, you must be aware that advanced planning through
=> proper channels provides the key to the success of this type venture.
=>
=> With these thoughts in mind, perhaps we can begin the dialogue
=> and possible planning steps for the 1997 National Scout Jambo
=> ree August 4-14 1997.
=>
=> Sincerely
=> Jack F. Moore
=> Director Jamboree Division

Two comments from this message I made:

It only cost the Australian Jamboree about AU$2,000 to put on the
1st World CyberSpace Jamboree (most of this cost was long distance phone
calls, as CompuServe Perth didn't have the neccessary phone lines)

Why can't the Internet be used as a form of communication? It would
be a lot cheeper trying to organise events with people in different
countries/time zones etc.

If you have any Q please don't hesitate to ask.

YiS
Lucas
