Last one and then I have to leave for work.
The square knots represent BSA's special awards which normally come in
the form of a medal, plaque or pendant. Since those awards normally
cannot be worn by volunteers and Scouts without either losing the
award (as I did with the Hornaday Award pin twice during Jamborees) or
without causing some undue attention (or without some disconfort by
the wearer), the cloth knot patches are smaller and can be easily
worn.
There's only a few awards which come in the form of a patch which
adults or Scouts couid wear...two of them are youth awards (the Arrow
of Light and the Eagle Scout Badge), while the other is the
Scoutmaster Award of Merit. Everything else either has a medal, pin,
pendant, certificate or plaque associated with the award.
Besides, you can only wear five medals confortably on your shirt,
anyways.
Finally, the knots are smaller and easier to wear and identify with
the award it represents, for the most part. The biggest confusions
come with two awards which share the same knot in the Cub Scouting
program and with the Scouters' Training Award and Scouters' Key Award
which can be earned by Scouters in several programs. For those
reasons, small program emblems are permitted for wear on those knots
by those holders of those awards.
Hope that helps...I have to change clothes and get to work. More
later.
