When I was a Webelos Leader, I found that it kept the Den busy enough working
on the Reqs for Webelos Badge in the first year, and AoL in the second year,
when the work on those badges was intersperced with work on the Activity Pins.
I started with 10 boys at the beginning of the each year. The first year,
the Den lost 4 boys: 1 dropped mid -year, too many other activities; 1
dropped in the spring after our parent/son picnic, didn't like "outdoor junk".
The Den had 8 boys get the Webelos Badge.
Over the summer, one boy lost interest and another boy moved away.
The second year, The other 2nd year Den lost it's leader, so the Committee
combined the 2 Dens. That brought my Den back up to 10. During the year, one
boy was pulled out by his dad. Dad didn't feel that the boy was working hard
enough on the reqs. (I argued with the father on that one, but lost.) A second
boy dropped because he said we "didn't do enough field trips". In the spring,
the remaining 8 recieved the "Arrow of Light".
The AoL presentation/Webelos Crossover was at a Pack meeting dedicated to
that event. Of the Pack members outside of the 2nd year Webelos Den, only 2
other families attended. The OA did the AoL presentation.
The highest number of Activity Pins earned by a boy was 18. The lowest was
9.
The pins, and the badges, were presented as earned. However, as has already
been stated, the timing of completeing the badge requirements can be arranged so
that the badges are earned just before the annual (in our Pack) Den to Den
graduation.
What I am saying is that there is more to do in the Webelos Dens then just
earning the Webelos Badge and Arrow of Light, and learning about the Boy Scouts.
