Ian and Susan and the rest,
I think I understand your points. On reflection I see my comments
were too general. I still believe we can adopt the philosophy of
not being too critical with the job performance of a volunteer in
a committee position or even if they are chairing a special event.
However, there are key positions within a unit where we cannot use
the "something is better than nothing" philosophy. Also, there
must be limit on how poor of a job performance we tolerate of
even a volunteer in a non critical function.
In general I'd ask that we remember that we are only volunteers.
So if we fail in one job that doesn't mean we should be cast
away completely. Maybe we just need to find the right job. At
the same time, we need to remember that while the programs
of BSA are flexible, the policies are not. If a leader is violating
policy, as in your unit Susan, then action should be immediate.
I would like to think most of us are willing to put the boys and the
program ahead of our own egos and that we cheerfully give
and accept help to be better leaders.
