Bob,
I can only express to you an answer in these terms. I have been a
Martial Artist for the last 22 years. I have Black Belt rankings in five
different disciplines. Three years ago I was rated 12th in my weight class
(220) in the nation in kumite (fighting). When I recieved my first Black
Belt..I remember very well what the Master said to me. "Now that you have
a Black Belt... It has taken us all this time to get you to think in the
right ways...now and only now can you begin to learn" You know what, he
was right. You see I believe that the path to Eagle is one of experience
and yes there are some who want and seek the Eagle rank for it alone, like
some Black Belts that I have known. But it is that exceptional young man
who not only attains the rank but becomes embodied within the movement to
change another boys life, To give back to the movement. As for what keeps
him in Scouting...I could fill ten pages on what keeps many, but, lets say
what keeps us? The answer... "grasshopper, rest within yourself".
