To the best of my knowledge, the Ashley Book of Knots is not availible in
softcover. The suggested retail price on the inside cover is $45, but I
got mine for considerably less (The cover had slight water damage- but the
book didn't!). The price isn't that much out of the range of any other
thick hardbound book (The Ashley is 620 pages), and the information
provided in it could take a lifetime to digest. Over 3900 knots. My
only complaint with it is the fact that a lot of the knots, including
some ornamental ones I have seen in other places, are not named. Then
again, naming knots has not exactly been the most precise practice
anyway, for a while a knot was known as both the English and American
Bowline. Maybe someone should set up sort of a scientific hierarchy of
knots, binomial nomenclature in a new application. Anyway, I'd shop
around a bit, then buy the book at the best price, no matter what it may
be. But remember, people can be the best source for knots. That's why I
teach them whenever I can.
