Re: Attracting Webelos

To all,

My neighbor and I were both Webelo Den Leaders in Acton for two years.

We had 8 boys which had been in Cub Scouts several years together.

Dennis (an avid camper and Eagle Scout from the 70s) and I decide to
follow the Webelo program for only 1 1/2 years. By this time, the boys
had fulfilled the achivement requirements for the Arrow of Light.

In December of the second year DENNIS AND I ASSUMED that all the boys would
continue onto Boy Scouts and started teaching all the Tenderfoot requirements.
This REALLY got the boys interested and THEY JUST ASSUMED they were going
to continue on. They transfered to Scouting in April and ALL were tenderfoot
for the June Court of Honor and then most went to Summer Camp.

I recommend that, as adult leaders, we make the assumption that the boys will
go on and teach accordingly. We took all the boys to Scout meetings
(4 troops in town), we went on hikes and we let them choose what troop
they would join.

We had 1 boy move to Texas but he continued in Boy Scouts.
We had 6 boys join Troop 1 in Acton. (My boyhood troop!)
We had 1 boy join another troop because his brother was there
but found within 3 months that he missed the interation of his friends and
his brother would like the space.

After 2 years in the troop, we have lost 1 boy because he vacationed in
Taiwan for 3 months and would not re-connect with his friends. (He fell
behind in achivements by not being around and he didn't want to start
in this manner so he gave up).
