Carolyn Cummings, the BSA's External Communications Director told me
that over the next three days, local Councils will receive a fax
concerning the BSA's response to their fellow Scouts and Scouters in
Zaire. It will have information on what local Councils, Districts and
units can do to support the effort, as well as information which can
be imported into local newsletters and bulletins on what individual
Scouts and Scouters can do financially and personally to show their
concern and support.
She is also faxing me a copy of the information and as soon as I get
it, I would be more than happy to share it with you and other Scouters
worldwide. As we have watched the suffering on the television and
read the accounts in our newspapers and magazines, I would ask also
that you set aside some time with your families and friends and
reflect upon the loss of life and the extraordinary efforts of our
government and others around the world. Most importantly, please
reflect upon the work and efforts of a vast group of volunteers,
including members of our Scouting family, in relieving suffering, in
taking care of those whom are able to move back to their homes and
villages, and with dignity and a high sense of responsibility, moving
and burying those whom have died.
