50 miler Award

Is this an old requirement?
--no, it is current and has been the requirement that I know about since 1982.
Does one interpret this as no more than ten miles per day count toward the
fifty total?
--no interpretation required here - 10 miles a day is your limit each 10 counts
towards your 50 miles.
Is the requirement on the application a misprint?
--no - it is and has been for many years correct. BSA is many many times more c
areful than other groups -- however, our death rate is extremely low also.
Why is it that the first time we see this requirement is when we

--if you knew about the award, BSA assumes that the leadership also knows to loo
k up the application (all applications even tour permits carry summaries) which
always details the exact requirements. This is to be taught in basic training
, and at any activity where the award is presented. again, not new.
I also heard from another scoutmaster that there is a "rule" that the hikers are
not allowed to retrace their paths. Any truth to that rule?
--dangerous thing, listening to other volunteers without looking up the informat
ion -- everything is printed. BSA runs the biggest printing press in the sky!
no - there is no such rule regarding tracing steps.
Did you file a tour permit for this hike with your local council? That is also
required. The council then should have caught that what you were planning was
not within our safety guidelines. However, even if they did not -- the BSA mov
ement assumes and gives its' leaders credit to be able to seek out totally all
information before taking the boys into situations that could be hazardous.
You seem to have had no disaster -- good. We have high adventure bases too whic
h have stringent safety rules, but which are not printed in a general manner.
You need to seek out the particular information before acting. That is part of
the training that is to be taught in basic training. However, there is no way
to know what is being done where.
Just happy you are all safe.
