I have seen elsewhere that the BSA has some sort of instant recognition
device for the Scouts below the First Class rank. This is quite similar to
the Cub equivalent (Wolf/Bear progress award and the beads) with the obvious
difference being 3 strands of beads rather than two. I do not believe this
has much use and my opinion is that it is likely too juvenile for nearly all
Scouts. However, in your case, it might be appropriate.
