WOW!!!!! I really DO miss this place!!! I've spent the past two days
just reading and extracting well over TWO WEEKS' worth of personal and
Scouts-l mail (haven't even _tried_ to read all of the postings from
Rec.Scouting....*grin*)....I'll try as hard as I can to reply to the
ones (after the personal ones tonight!) that are the most "topical"
since I've missed a lot! Later on, I'll tell you the latest that's
been going on here at the Ryan/Walton home!

What your local Council (or Order of the Arrow Lodge) is doing, is
trying to "cash in" on the collector's market by creating "special
editions" of the Camp Patch (or the CSP) which they hope, will go up
in value as time goes onward. By what you just stated, they plan on
marketing this for quite some time (well..there ARE 12 points to the
Scout Law, unless they plan on cranking out two per year...).
This is a cheap way to raise money for the camp operation...because
they THINK that we collectors will want to hold onto those patches as
time goes on.

The value of an item is only shared between you and the person(s)
wanting the item. I've found over the years that camp patches and
other "garbage" patches (just a term, nothing personal) are only
valuable when and if the camp goes away, changes names, or over a
period of at least twenty-five years. So, by the first part of the
new century, those patches will be worth about twice or perhaps three
times the initial investment.
Or not....some local Councils make the mistake of producing massive
quantities of a given patch and therefore reducing it's value to
anyone except a bonafide former camper of that camp. For instance,
the Old Kentucky Home Council produced two CSPs at the start of the
CSP period.....the earlier one was created without the state and was
only issued to Council volunteers and professionals. The other one
was produced later (six months later) with a different company which
made the patch exactly alike except for the additional "Kentucky" line
at the bottom center and the color was a deeper shade of red than the
previous one. While the value of the "orange" OKHC patch has remained
constant at around $500 a patch in good shape, the "red" OKHC patch is
now worth $35 from being worth $220 two years back. I have one of
both and wouldn't trade anything for them...they are part of a set
that I have framed here in the office room.
Hope that answers the question...(Would I stick around and get the
whole set? Yeah...but only to trade them all out later for something
that I really want (like a Ace or a Ranger square knot!).
