Re: A Second Request from a new SM

Scott:

Going to a boy-run troop from a baby-sat troop is definitely a double-edged
sword. On the one hand, the boys LOVE to be in charge when it comes to
making decisions (after they get over the shock of being able to, that is),
but having to do the work is a whole different ball game. It's part of the
"I'm here now, entertain me" syndrome. I'm losing one boy (probably)
because he is frankly lazy and doesn't want to do anything for himself...
he prefers to go on church campouts (his church has a camping program
competitive in some ways with scouting) because there the adults do all the
setup, do the cooking and the cleanup. All the kids have to do is listen
to a couple of lectures and hang out. Although we plan LOTS of free time
on campouts, there is generally some business to accomplish, and you
definitely take care of yourself. Maybe if you wean them gently without a
cold-turkey withdrawal it would help. Just make sure they know that your
'help' is temporary. I'm sure Steve Myers has some comments about this
(and he probably doesn't agree with me about the 'help'. But Steve's a
good Bear, if I could just get him to call Peggy......)
