I've been apart of a troop for about 2 months now. They have had the new boy
patrol running for about a month. (Our pack crossed the boys over at the end
of Feb.. The other pack crossed theirs over in March.)
Most things seam to work fairly well. But, there does seam to be a problem
with what to do with boys who join at odd times. The boys from our pack
camped with an other patrol for their first campout. They had fun, but they
weren't really given any duties. The troop didn't have a guide or
information for the parents who would help the boys until the patrol was
formed.
Part of the concept of the new boy patrol is you have all the boys working at
a similar level. (The earlier discussion listed the good and bad features of
that.) If you now have boys joining 8 months later, they are starting their
Tenderfoot while most of the patrol is finishing their First Class.
