I haven't read the whole thread (so much mail, so little time:), but
training is not always the complete answer. The current SM of my
former troop seemed like he'd be a great SM, too--Eagle Scout, pillar
of the community, surgeon, etc.--but even with Scoutmastership Fundamentals
he doesn't have a clue. His interpersonal skills, in a word, stink.
I don't think even Wood Badge will correct his problems--and I don't think
he'll last through the first weekend, anyway. I just had a report that
a parent had been told perhaps his son should consider another troop
because the troop did more "upscale" things and there were concerns that
the young man's family couldn't afford to participate. (!)
Sorry I couldn't be as short, but "You can train a Scouter, but you
can't make him use the training." I found out the hard way.
