Re: NEW MEMBER PROBLEMS

Gee, guys and gals,

All of this is fascinating. Mike's sugestion of getting a separate troop that
enhances the program for the Orthodox and Conservative Jewish scouts sounds
interesting. It seems to me that it will allow for that troop to meet the
spiritual needs of the scouts in the program, without comprimising to values
that those scouts and their families hold to. I know that some people are bound
to disagree with me veheminantly on this. But I like this idea a lot. I think
that the spiritual demention is often times under emphisised in scout troops on
the grounds that the leaders don't want to offend anyone. In a troop where
every one comes from the same religious background (orthodox or conservative
judaism, etc...) then there isn't the fear that they'll offend someone by
actively practicing their faith, and having the troop as a whole adhere to that
faith.
I'd maintain that unless a youth knows an respects his/her own faith, then it
does no good to teach him/her to respect those of different faiths. I may be a
minority here, but that to me is important.
Lastly, I'll state that there is no one way for a troop to be run in this
regard. To each their own.
