Our council will be having a camporee this fall at Fort Hood in Central
Tex, Heart O' Texas Council. We did this two years ago and we had 1200
scouts and scouters attend. And while the walk to the HQ was a good one,
we were stuck back in the corner, the support that the military gave us
helped to pull of an excellent event. Our boys left there talking about
looking at the tanks, the 2nd AD's band, and the 1st Cavs horse troop,
not to forget the demo by the soldiers who rappelled out of some copters.
Now, I'll admit that having a soundsystem at your campfire can hurt the
atmosphere of the fire, especially if your sitting next to the system. 300 or
1200 at a campfire, either can be very impersonal.
Not to neglect the smaller events. Last weekend, we had something called the
Scouting Adventure Weekend @ Baylor. it was a small Friday and Saturday event
that drew about 200 kids to it. I've been told they enjoyed it. IMHO, both big
events and small events have their good points. In our council the larger the
envent (USUALLY) the more resources we have available.
