Mike Hays says:
>YOU CAN'T TEACH YOUTH ABOUT HOW TO GET ALONG

To cocoon the youth from the world means to protect them from the world. As the
world gets more and more violent, ie LA riots, drive by shootings etc and so
forth, I kind of want to protect them from the worst of it. It seems to me that
Scouting is one such method that protects kids from the worst society has to
offer, and if that is cocooning them from the world then lets jump on the
bandwagon. On the other side, the youth will see what they will see on tv,
and we can't really protect them from some of the trash there, but we have
an obligation to show them the right way of living, and this means living
by example.

>be excluded from even indirect exposure to until they are BIG BOYS.
(lots of good stuff deleted)
>Hope I haven't offended anyone but as St Paul said "All things in
>moderation". IMHO this must include our attitude and policies on
>alcohol.
Without wishing to offend or flame anyone, I'll risk this response. In
several major denominations in the US, they believe that any consumption
(drinking!) of any alcohol is "inherently wrong" so lets not misunderstand the
motives behind some leaders regarding this "right of passage" which they may
well believe runs against their religious tenents. Fortunately, we here tend to
tolerate others' beliefs even if we don't really understand them.
Yes, St Paul did say "All things in moderation" He also said that, if what you
do causes your brother to stumble then don't do it (Andy's rough translation)
No flames intended,
