ORIENTEERING

Cliff,
I was able to put together an orienteering course here in Crossroads of America
Council several years ago. At that time I purchased commercial orienteering
markers and scorecards. The course was set up in a very large rolling wooded
area where the Scouts had several miles to run. They in no way could complete
the course (a timed event) in the allowed time which meant that the good
orienteering skills would be obvious. It was a tremendous sucess, especially
for
the older boys! The time limit for the event by the way was 3 hours; size of
the
area in question - about 1 x 3 miles.
Since then I have made my own orienteering cloth markers of another color
(bright blue instead of orange and white) and yet another set of bright yellow
streamers (6" x 8 feet) for other orienteering events to be run together so we
can take care of different skill levels and events at the same time.
My problem has been the maps! I envy you for having the four color maps. Any
suggestions on how to do this would be welcomed! My first solution was to
enlarge a copy of a topographical map to the desired scale (black and white -
poor detail). The second solution was much better - I found out that the
national office has an engineering section in Irving, Texas. They have enlarged
site plan mapsof almost all Boy Scout Camps. If you call and ask, they will
make a copy for you at nominal cost. These in turn were xeroxed to the desired
scale (by me) and used in our events - still black and white but better detail.
I wish I could get our local professional types to realize what a benefit a 4
color orienteering map would be.
I'm sure you have read all of the orienteering guides on the subject which I
find to be excellent for ideas and suggestions on the different kinds of events
to run. For those looking for a new program idea for a camporee or summer camp
- this is it!
